If your tank is well established, neon tetras work fine. I think if you had swordtails in there, 2 would be all you could put in a 10 gal. as they need a lot of room. Guppies are good also, and they are very colourful as well. Try some corycat for the bottom as well.

I assume that your tank is only a week old when I give this advice. If this is so, your neon likely died as a result of the cycling.

When you begin a new fishtank, you need to let it run with a good, hardy fish for about a month so the water can grow the proper bacteria to sustain life. Google fishtank cycling, and you will learn all sorts of new things.

As for fish you could do now, I suggest the following:

Betta fish (can be kept with other fish)
Guppies
Mollies
Swordtails
Gouramis
Tiger barbs
Cherry Barbs
Rosy Barbs

Ask your local fishstore which fish can go with which, as some will kill each other. At this time, you will want to keep NO MORE than one-two fish, or it will be too much for your tank and the cycle will take longer. After about a month, you can gradually begin to add more fish.

Any of the smaller Tetra's and Danios are suitable. Zebra Danio's are one of the hardiest as well as Pristella Tetra's and the Gold variety is particularly beautiful. Neon's will work but they are harder to take care of. Also be careful not to put too many in your tank. The rule is 1 inch of fish per gallon. Ten Neons would work, 7 Pristellas or 5 Zebras. Ask your pet store dealer about others.

possibly your other fish ate them, never get large and small fish to put in the same tank. If something can fit into a fish's mouth, it will try to eat it.
