I don;t know where the whole Santa thing came into play I think another country or something but in the Bible people brought gifts to Mary and Joseph when Jesus was born that is where the gift giving comes into play.

Back before Jesus and the Catholic Church coopted the holiday (formerly known as Saturnalia), people used to get drunk, get really rowdy, feast like there was no tomorrow, and exchange gifts. Then Jesus came along and it became, partially, about Jesus. It was never, ever fully about Jesus. Frankly, the various churches, particularly the protestant faiths, ignored Christmas for centuries and the Churches would be closed. This changed in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. One should note that in the 1600s, the English Government (then run by the Cromwells) actually outlawed Christmas. The reason was that it was too pegan. In fact, if you go into some churches today, if you look closely, you may notice that some Christmas decorations are not allowed. A Christmas tree is not allowed in some cases.

If you look at the Bible, Christ was not born on Christmas Day. He was born in the Spring most likely. But the Christians in the early middle ages coopted the holiday to take a pegan holiday that the Christians just couldn't shake and turn it into something Christian. This caused more Pegans to become Christian. They still had their favorite holiday of the year, they suddenly they had different reasons to celebrate it. All the better. So it isn't about Christ so much as it is about the early Christians trying to convert as many people as possible.

I am not quite sure where the santa thing comes from... I am Catholic and I believe why people exchange gifts is because of the way the people brought gifts to Jesus like the magi did. When I was little I was taught that you should treat everyone the same as you would Jesus. In giving gifts to each other I think of it as giving gifts to Jesus...

not every body recognizes Christmas for the same reasons as christians... do you give or recieve gifts? if so then it was a stupid question..... but when families give gifts i think they should tell why they are celebrating it so the kids know it more then a "fun" time of year..

Christmas is the spirit of giving....thus presents not just for family and friends, but strangers, too.....i don't think it comes from Santa Claus at all.

It originated in Germany where an old tinker would take broken toys and fix them to give to the poor children. After his death, the parents carried on this tradition he started for the children and it grew.

Presumably the tradition was an analogy to the magi.
