ok, I have a really weak internet signal, want to boost it so what I was planning is to hook my parents computer up with a wireless adapter that the other comptuers have. Move the "Wireless ADSL modem" to a different, central location in the house and hook it up to the phone line.

Would this idea work so that everyone has a fairly decent internet connection, even though the wireless modem isn't hooked up to a PC? Also, I've heard that it needs to be joined up to a computer to process the account information, which is inportant to our isp. That true?

so, if it isn't connected to a computer, isp will just shut us own entirely and no signal for anyone?

And if I put the routher on the second floor, everyone on the first floor should be fine?

From the top:

Your wireless router probably does several things.

1. It splits up, or "routes", the internet traffic from / to your house
2. It logs in to your ISP's system (probably)
3. It provides wireless signal
4. It is a switch, which allows computers inside of the house to communicate via wires and wireless signal.

So, if you move it, you'll need a network cable long enough to reach the DSL modem, and all of the cables that connect the other computers (if any) will need to be extended as well.

What I'd suggest is to run a network cable (aka, Cat 5, ethernet) to a place where you want a second wireless to be. Then plug that cable into the 4-port hub section of the current wireless, and then into the 4-port section of a second wireless router.

In that second router, make the following changes:

- make the SSID the same as the first wireless router
- make sure that both are on the same channel (I prefer 11)
- make sure that both have the same security method and password info
- turn off DHCP in the second router

There... that should be it... now, when you move around the house, your computer will invisibly move between whatever signal is stronger.

I hooked up 2 of these systems in the past week.

Yes this should work as long as you install a wireless network card in the PC that is currently hooked up to the modem.

You will also have to make sure the phone line has the correct DSL filters installed (same as the way the modem is currently hooked up).

You may have to "play" with the location of the modem in order to determine the strongest signal strength for all computers.

you can move the wireless router & modem together to another site at yr home

You need to connect yr PC, so that the ISP know that you are a subscriber (they check your PC's network card address to know whether you are their customer or not)

Pls place your wireless ROUTER as high as possible, the way the wireless signal spread is by umbrella model, the higher the better

It'll be fine, you only need it hard-wired to a PC during the initial configuration. Once it's been configured it doesn't need to be hardwired to a PC.

Pick it up and move it. It's wireless
