First of all try a standard size paper clip to open up the DVD/CD Rom. Push it in fairly hard. If all else fails purchase an external HD or Flash Memory stick so you can retrieve your information from it.

Nick makes a good point. However if your CD rom drive has a disc in then the disc may have broken and that is preventing the drive from opening.
so you need to find a screwdriver suitable to open the case on your computer.
you need to power off the computer, open the case, then remove the CD-Rom from the chasis, next find a screwdriver to open up the CD-rom drive case. carefully now once the screws are removed you need to seperate the components making a carefull note of what goes where so you can remove the CD manually then screw the drive back together.
once the drive is back together, replace the drive and cables as you found them originally, close the chasis/ computer case then power on the system.
next just try the eject button to make sure it is working normally. if not then you may need to buy a new cd-rom. don't panic, a basic cd-rom can be yours for £15 delivered approx, and a DVD-ROM or DVD burner not much more under £30 delivered. see http://www.dabs.com for details and comparisons of computer components.
to fit the new drive follow the same procedure as listed above for the removal of the current drive, just insert a new drive where you remove the old drive from.

it is so easy to do a child of two could do it.

good luck.

keep trying with the pin. make sure the pin is relatively thick, and make sure you're not pushing it into blank space. you will feel a significant resistance when you are pushing the pin against the thing you're supposed to be pushing. i hope you're using a paperclip, not a pointy sharp pin...might work better. the cd will eventually open enough (about 1/2 inch) for you to pull it out all the way. make sure your comptuer is turned OFF when doing this.

Go to "My Computer" right click the drive and click eject.
