Did the actors actually play their own music, I noticed the lead guitarist is playing a riff in a Volkswagon commercial.

the actors (christopher guest, michael mckean, and harry shearer) all played their own instruments.
they actually toured as spinal tap for a little while after the movie came out.

Yep they sure did. Btw- That was Nigel Tuffnel (Christopher Guest) playing and falling off that VW in the commercial.

I believe they DID. Strange, huh? You were watching (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) Christopher Guest playing in that.
You'd be amazed how many actors are really good musicians (I use that term subjectively)

Yes, that is Christopher Guest and he is one of the most underrated movie makers in Hollywood.

i had the director's cut DVD. it said they all CAN play instruments.
not sure if they DID. but i'd guess, yes.
the same cast was in A MIGHTY WIND, too.
