I am going on vacation in March and I asked my best friend to house/dog sit for me for 5 days while I am gone. She asked me if I was going to pay her? I got really upset. She only lives two streets away plus she still lives with her Mom (she's 25) so I thought it would be nice for her to get away. I have done A LOT for her in the past few years. Is it wrong to get upset or should she expect to get paid?

I wasn't planning on leaving her hanging. My plan was to get her a small gift or take her to dinner...I just got upset that she is demanding cash. What do you pay someone for that anyways?

Well, dog-sitting is a fairly big responsibility, so I understand why she would want to be paid, even if she is your best friend. I think its ok that you got upset, since you probably didn't expect it, but don't hold it against her, especially if she's your good friend. I thought it was great that you were going to give her a small gift or take her to dinner, but if she was actually upfront about it, and asked for money, the best thing to do would just be to give her a reasonable amount, and forget about it. Let it blow over, and don't hold a grudge. Now, if she's upset with the amount you give her, then that's a different story. I hope it all works out between the two of you! ^__^
P.S. - to make you feel better, yes, I suppose maybe it was a bit rude of her to actually ask to be paid. But...what do I know. It all depends on the situation. Maybe she was polite about it, I don't know. It doesn't have to be a big deal though, so forgive her =)

No, I wouldn't pay for that, unless I had asked someone to housesit or unless they had a long drive. I would do exactly what you were planning to do--take them to dinner or bring her a souvenir from the trip, or both.
She sounds kinda selfish. Yeah, I'd be upset, lol.
Does she not have a job? Good Lord!

You should pay your friend something, she is doing you a service even if it seems small or a favor.
It does not have to be much, some pet sitting services charge as much as 50 a day.

I would want to be paid. I assume she has a life to live and she would be rearranging her schedule for you. Maybe you could offer to do a favor for her in return if you can't afford payment.

You should pay her, after all she is doing you a favor and making your life a little easier so you could go away. You should WANT to pay her.

No...she should do it for free but you can offer to take her out for bite to eat to return the favor!

Why should she use up her time to watch your pooches for free. Don't be a tight wad and pay her, or watch them yourself.
