Disconnect your USB cable. Plug in your ethernet cord from your modem to your computer. Open your Network Connections...(control panel, and network connections) (you may have to click "Switch To Classic View") In this window, there should be a list of all the ways your computer can connect to the internet... Find where it says Local Area Connection. It probably says "Disabled" below it. If so, right click it, and click Enable. Once connected, check if you have internet. If not, open your Network Connections again, right click the thing you just enabled, and click Repair.... If it isnt listed in you Network Connections, then your networking card might not be installed, or might be broken

by design the user is supposed to use one or the other. connecting both will not increase your downstream rates.

I would use the Ethernet connection it was designed for networking, USB was not..
