Earthworms exchange gases by diffusion through their skin as long as the skin is moist but not too wet.

The clitellum is the smooth band toward the head end of the worm. It secretes the gooey material that encloses the eggs and sperms and makes the cocoon. After the clitellum secretes this material, the worm crawls backward out of the sticky goo, placing the eggs and sperms into the cocoon as it slips backward out of the goo.
