it was only a matter of time that those living in the colonized territories who had been exposed to western/european ideals of self-determination, democracy, individualism, etc. would come to expect and desire those things for themselves, thus seeking to become independent from that force which had presented itself in a paternalistic fashion, but which in reality was parasitic in nature. and while often colonization was economic, the political was used to oppress nations into being locked into a co-dependent realtionship with the colonizer. the only means of independence was to see that the economic and the political independece are symbiotic and msut be won together. so it took time for these colonies to reject the colonizer economically in order to build an independence from them so that politically, they would not need to be allied with this oppressive force anymore.
