I play white almost all the time, and use the english opening. I avoid being black because I am unable to open how I ussually do with white.

The only difference is that white moves first. Neither of them have advantage over each other.

One of the most interesting differences between Shogi and western Chess is that how you tell which side a piece in Shogi is on (except for the king) is not by what color it is, but by which direction its front is facing. This also allows a player to capture an enemy piece, and then put it into play as his or her own, by reversing the direction it is facing when it is re-placed on the board.

Although the only difference between the two is that white moves first, It also depends on whether or not you are an offensive of defensive player. If you play well offensively, then white is best. Conversely, black is defensive (i.e you are repsonding to the opening move of your opponent), and if you play defense well, then black will suit you better.

White begins with the initiative, and it's white's game to lose, where black must play well to draw and hope for a mistake by white if he's to win, but if you like the English game, why not learn some of the less sharp variations of the Sicilian defense?

If you are white, you get to go first. But, have you ever noticed that white has the A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, etc.? It goes to show that white gets the bottom of the board. But if you are black you get the top. And you can also track down easier stuff if you are black.
I mean like you can find out the opponents strategies!

The simple answer is that white does move first... but notice the location of the queen. She's always on her own color. For black the left side and for white the right...
