u should take it to a vet, they are trained for handling situations like this. this is best if you have good intentions and your dog's best interest at heart.

This sounds really bad. He needs to see a vet ASAP. Actually, if you have an emergency vet nearby, please take him there (most towns have one vet that will handle after hour emergencies). Normally, I don't tell ppl to run off to a vet first thing, but honestly, this needs vet care. The fact that his paw is swollen shows me that he is in a lot of pain, and the paw is already badly infected. Neosporin cannot help this type of wound. In fact, if you look at the tube, it says it only helps minor cuts. Go ahead and wrap the paw in a sterile bandage. You can get the sterile bandage at any pharmacy, drug store, or walmart. The wound needs to stay protected until you get him to the vet. Also, baby aspirin is considered safe for dogs, and it may help with the pain.

of course, get him to the emergency vet first, but if for some reason you live in the middle of nowhere and the nearest emergency vet is really far (like 10 hours away), go ahead and wrap it and help him with the pain.

He needs to go to the vet. The pads on their feet do not have a great blood supply and do not heal well. Since he walks on his feet, and now an open wound, all day long, he needs antibiotics to help protect him from whatever bacteria he is going to pick up on the ground. The major signs of infection that you would be able to easily check are swelling, discharge and fever. If you decide to wait to go to the vet I would monitor his condition carefully, keep his foot as clean as possible and continue to apply a triple antibiotic as you have. As I mentioned though, at the very least he should be on an oral antibiotic, and as such should see the vet.

The only course of action is to take your dog to the vet. He is completely dependent on you for his health and well-being and this is a fairly large wound, open to infection. The fact that it is swollen indicates that it is already infected. It could rapidly progress to blood poisoning or gangrene. Leave it untreated for too long & amputation could be the only option. Take him to the vet while the wound is easier and less expensive to treat. With the love and devotion that your dachshund gives to you every day comes your responsibility to give him the care he deserves.

It will be cheaper on you to take your daschund to the vet now than later. Also probably alot easier on the dog.If an infection sets in his foot you will have the problem of keeping it out of it's blood stream as that can kill him. As the owner of three daschunds, I suggest you take him on to the vet ASAP. I would want to know how such a thing happened to him. Do you have broken glass or such in your yard. I'd find out why it happened. Good luck with him. If you don't take him watch for swelling of the foot and redness or draining of the area.

Keep the neosporin on it, keep him very quiet (no running around) until you can get him to the vet to have this treated. And yes, he does need to see the vet.

You could hope for the best but if you want it to heal properly, you should probably take it to the vet.
