I have the same problem, I was in a car accident before my pregnancy and have had really bad back problems.
First, You need to stretch, a lot. Ask your ob gyn for a few stretches you can do for your back, they will really help.
If the stretches don't help ask your Dr. about tylenol with codine. This will not hurt the baby, they also use it during labor so they know if doesn't harm the baby.

I too have a back problem from before my pregnancy. Anything makes my back hurt, what I do it I take a extra strength Tylenol (which my OB told me to take) and take a nice warm shower or bath. For Christmas my mom bought me a seat that massages your back. You can get these at almost any store. My mom got it at Canadian tire, however if you don't live in Canada that won't help you. I know that they have them at walmart too, they range from about 25-60 dollars. The one that I have also has heat. The other thing is my husband massages and rubs my back before I go to sleep. There isn't anything else that I can think of though. I used to take a pain reliever stronger than Tylenol but because I am pregnant I can't. I know it is uncomfortable, but you can also get those heat packs that stick to your back. Other than that I am out of ideas. It is all worth it though, just think you only have about 18-19 weeks left. I know that seems long but it will go by fast.Hope this helps, good luck.

Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

Congrats btw i'm about 21 weeks also due end of May. I have siatica atm had it for about a month but i don't want to go to the dr's just so they can give me more pills. Take enough as it is. What with medication for epilepsy, multi-vitamins for pregnancy and a iron and folate deficiency pill. In answer to your question i think there are many options open to you. You could try a chiropracter, heat/cool packs, swimming(not only good for you, your back and the pregnancy as it doesn't put added stress on the body and it's a non-impact sport), massage, medication (from your dr), acupuncture and resting. Does your partner realise how much pain your in and does he/she help? I think you wanna nip this in the bud as you haven't even gotten to the labour bit yet imagine how your back injury is going to feel combined with that. Doesn't even beat thinking about. Yowee! Go see a chiropractor that is trained in prenatal care. They will not only alleviate your back pain but having proper spinal alignment can speed up labour and prevent your baby from facing the wrong way!

I would try a chiropractor...maybe a physical therapist, the real back pain is yet to come - if it hurts this much at 21 weeks it MUST be related to the back injury - maybe you can get health insurance to cover some treatment.

When I was 5 months pregnant my back was killing me also. It ended up being my cyatic nerve. The doc gave me a prescription for motrin. It definately helped. It doesnt last the rest of the pregnancy though. It goes away during the 6th month.

I am 34 weeks and having bad low back pain off and on. I went out and bought a heating pad from Walmart, its helped me a lot. Baths also help. Massages might help and also sleeping on your side with a body pillow or other pillow between your knees. If you're having trouble sleeping at night, take tylenol pm. My doc told me its safe.

Oh, I feel for you...I am only 10 weeks and feel like I am dying everyday, this time around is three times worse than my last. As far as back pain, try warm baths. Not hot, just warm. Also, try a good support bra.
