You need to use a WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) or WPA key in your network configuration. This is typically a random 26-digit hexadecimal string. You need to enter this key in all computers on your network and all of your routers.

Enable WPA encryption

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please note that the Wireless Router or the Wireless Access Point should also support WPA security in order to enable WPA in Windows XP as the Notebook's Wireless Network Adapter does have that option. Please contact the Manufacturer of the Wireless Router / Access Point for more details on enabling WPA in the router / access point.

To enable WPA we need to configure the WPA settings in Windows XP. If the Customer has already updated the driver and installed the Windows XP update in that order, then you may continue with performing the steps to configure WPA settings present at the link given below. If the updates are not done in the other order, then first install the drivers for the Wireless LAN card and then install the Windows XP update to enable WPA again.

===Update LAN Express drivers===

Download and install updated LAN Express IEEE 802.11 Wireless Driver from either of the below mentioned URLS:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software1/ob832/ob832mu/HP_WLAN.exe

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&softwareitem=ob832mu&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

NOTE: Clicking the link may give an error indicating it is invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address on the remaining line(s) and paste it at the end of the address showing in your browser until the complete address is displayed in the Address box.

===Microsoft Update===

You can download the Windows XP update to support WPA from either of the below mentioned URL:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5039EF4A-61E0-4C44-94F0-C25C9DE0ACE9&displaylang=en

NOTE: Clicking the link may give an error indicating it is invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address on the remaining line(s) and paste it at the end of the address showing in your browser until the complete address is displayed in the Address box.

=== Configure WPA settings===

Then follow the steps at the following link to configure WPA settings to enable WPA in Windows XP:

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/expertzone/columns/bowman/03july28.asp

NOTE: Clicking the link may give an error indicating it is invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address on the remaining line(s) and paste it at the end of the address showing in your browser until the complete address is displayed in the Address box.
