Chad W. is correct. John Paciorek had the most official at bats in one season with a 1.000 batting average. He went 3-3 with two walks in his only major league game. He played one game for the Houston Colt .45's in 1963. He got injured and never played in MLB again.

He is the older brother to two other major leaguers, Tom and Jim Paciorek. Tom was the long-time announcer for the Chicago White Sox that just retired.

Possibly, but they would not have enough plate appearances (3.1 per game played by their team) to qualify for a batting title. Someone who did hit 1.0 for the season probably had only one PA.

That's 10.23(a) of the rulebook.

THese are the top 50 season batting averages in major league history:

1Levi Meyerle, ATH18710.492

Several players who have had only a small handful of at-bats have batted 1.000 but in order to qualify for an official batting average, you have to meet the league minimum in at-bats. The highest batting average by a player who met the league minimum was Hugh Duffy who hit .440 in 1894 for Boston.

This was copied and pasted from baseball almanac and the baseball rule book.
"Notes: Three point one plate (3.1) appearances per scheduled game are needed to make this list."

This is how the league minimum is determined. Meaning in a 162 game season a player must have at least 502.2 (503) plate appearances in order to have their batting average quaify.

The page below will show that Duffy has the fourth highest single season batting average but keep in mind the top three records come from AA ball.

There are tons of guys who have gone 1-1 or 2-2 in a season. Some guys it was their only call up and they can say that they were a 1.000 hitter (some even sign their autographs with 1.000 after their name).

Well, John Paciorek did hit 1.000 in 1963. Of course he did only have 3 at bats. I am sure there are others with very few at bats that did also. You didn't ask if they had to have a certain number of at bats, so, I just thought I'd throw that in.

None of the top three guys know anything and they probably want free two points.

If you are talking about an entire season, then the highest average was .438 by Hugh Duffy in 1894. No one in an entire season has ever gotten as high as that.

It is impossible to get as high as a 1.000 average for a season (this person would be the greatest player in history just because of one season and everyone would forget Babe Ruth).
