What happens if you get an "incomplete" grade for a college course? Obviously it can't affect your GPA, but will it stay on your transcript if you simply just take the course again next semester? I took taxation 350 last semester and it was a disaster, did learn anything from the profess and...got the incomplete because we had to write a term paper with a partner and my partner never helped out (team term papers weird huh?) so if the incomplete doesnt stay on my transcript I was thinking of just "forgetting" about the class and taking it with a different professor over the summer.

Contact your professor and your school and find out what the policy is regarding incomplete grades. Sometimes there are limitations such as time allowed to complete the course or professors you can take the course from.

Several years ago, I was unable to complete my courses at the university (due to illness). All my professors were very helpful in guiding me through the procedure and paperwork re: an incomplete grade. I made arrangements later with the professors to complete the course primarily on an independent study basis.

Maybe if you contact your professor, he/she may let you just complete the term paper so you don't have to repeat the course again and pay for it again (unless your college doesn't charge you for the course).

Otherwise, take the course with another professor. Just make sure you get a passing grade. Some schools will average the 2 grades and other schools will change the incomplete grade to an "F" if the course is not completed. It is not a good idea to have an "F" on your transcripts. You may decide to go back to school in the future and the grade will just lower your GPA on your application.

An incomplete is a way for the professor to give you more time to complete the work. If the work is not completed by the deadline designated by the college it will turn into an F. You should contact your professor immediately to discuss your options. Also check your college handbook for the specific rules for your school regarding incompletes and retaking courses. Some colleges will average the two grades others will replace the old grade with the new grade.
