start by researching which model and make you want. just like buying a car. some brands are asus, abit, gigabyte, etc. be very careful; all manufacturers make motherboards for a wide variety of cpu's. make sure you pick out carefully. which motherboard you buy also determines what kind of memory you can buy, and how many hard drives (both sata and ide), expansion cards, and usb devices you can attach.
i'd also go with pci-e because agp is slowly dying out.
then go to pricewatch.com, newegg.com, take your pick, and look at the prices. the motherboards are generally a little over $100 for the most up to date mainstream model.
personally, i go to www.asus.com and browse their models before deciding which model i want. (can't you tell i'm biased towards one manufacturer?). then i go looking for the best price/shipping/most reputable retailer to buy it from.

A motherboard is a important board which holds many different elements jointly and facilitates to connect and deal with them to type an entire device. Motherboard is a usual time period so there are more than a number of differing varieties. operating example, an Intel motherboard, is different from an AMD motherboard. they are both motherboards, yet they help diverse architectures, they deal with and take diverse elements as well as some similar elements. Motherboards would have diverse type elements to in high-quality condition certain needs. some motherboards are truly good for smaller footprints to guard area, frequently on the fee of skill and overall performance.

never get a new motherboard with agp. Old technology. If you're trying to save money, go with the AMD cpus. In games, you will not know/see the difference between Intel and AMD. AMD was thethe cpu leader for many years, but right now they are still the budget king. www.newegg.com is the best to shop for motherboards, very good customer service there.
Never buy from ebay, you will ALWAYS pay more for a used motherboard than a new one with a warranty.

When going for a motherboard I would suggest forgetting about AGP as it has been superseded by PCIe.
If you go to http://www.savastore.com/catalog/browse.aspx?cat_id=3122&page=2 they have motherboard kits, the most expensive is £288 and this includes dua core processor and memory.
First figure out which processor you want and what socket type it needs. Then look around for motherboards, if you go to http://www.dabs.com you can filter the products based on features you require. this at least gives you an idea.
Remember when buying a motherboard you also need to buy the processor and memory so factor this in to costs

It should have a compatible socket for your present processor which you didn't enlarge upon. It is probably socket 775 if it is a fairly recent processor.
Try this link below. You can use the left filter bar to get to the motherboard that meets the specs of your computer and processor. I have narrowed it down already to PCI Express16 boards.
They are all under $100 unless your change the search criteria.
