competions are great, typically the competition classes are harder because your will be dancing for judges not just for parents at a recital and the judges know what the dance should look like more or less, it is only scary for a little while, most of the time instructors make up the dance, there are catagories for all ages for little kids to senior adults. My experinces have been mostly great but i have been to a couple competitions that didnt seem fair because everybody pretty much got the same medal, silver for one because they were very picky and gold for the other because they let a lot of stuff go.

There are ballroom dance competitions that even 9 or 10 year olds can enter. It is hard (but fun) and it can be scary, as in you will be nervous. But that is part of the edge.
It is costly for lessons, and especially costumes and shoes. It is extremely competitive and cliquish.
The basic step elements of ballroom dance steps must be exhibited, but you can add your own style and flair. You need to remain true to the flavor of a style - this is so very evident in Latin dance.
One has to be very fit to be a dancer, and I recommend you take up Pilates to strengthen your core, and especially for males doing lifts. It also makes beautiful bodies with awesome abs and elegant posture.

I have danced a half dozen or so competitions at a novice level with many of my friends also competing. All my dance is west coast swing (well, when I compete), but much of what I say can also be applied to other partner dances. I prefer to do strictly events rather than jack and jill contests, but have done both. My personal experience tells me that jack and jill (you don't know your partner or the music) are not something I enjoy all that much at the novice level since it is such a mixed bag with the skill level of your partners.
I find that some people I can just not connect with some people (which says something about my skill and that of my potential partners), and the dance just looks bad. Other times, I have amazing follows who just dance wonderfully with me. This is why I enjoy a strictly where I know my partner well enough to where any mistakes can be played off, and I know what she is capable of. Pro-am competitions are pretty much the same idea as a strictly where you don't have to worry about random partners (but sometimes have to be concerned with overzealous instructors).
Also, usually at the lower levels of competition, the judges are looking for technique, connection, and a clean execution of the basics. The intermediate and higher levels are allowed more freedom to interpret the music as they see fit instead of worrying about every step being executed by the book. This means more freedom to take chances and risks. This idea also works with solo dance where the people in the upper divisions have already proved they know the basics and are allowed to express themselves more than novices.
So, is it scary? When you are out there alone with no clue about the music or your partner, it is totally scary to where you have to have the utmost confidence in yourself. You are literally being judged by people on how well you dance which can be a huge blow to your ego if you receive low scores. I have been asked by some of the judges on the social dance floor if I taught lessons but have also scored pretty horribly in the contests because there are so many unknown variables and sometimes stage fright comes into play. Other times, I feel great with the dance, and everything works without too many hitches.
If I had to do it, I would start out knowing who my partner was and dance with random people on the social dance floor to learn how to compensate with varying body sizes, levels of connection, and skill levels. The basics are something you have to drill into your head to where they become second nature, and you can start learning to compensate with your partner. The same applies in solo dances; learn to be comfortable with yourself and the dance, then move outside the element of your normal practice space and invite people to watch you. It is better if you start younger, but I started at 21 without too much trouble. If you want to do well, you will do well if you keep your head in the dance.

It depends... some girls are super mean, and others are as sweet as can be! You have to check the rules for each competition.
