The Lakota were a plains people. They had moved from what is now Canada only 50 or so years before Europeans first settled on the Americas.
By adapting to the new new technology of the horse they kept control of the plains away from other Native Americans as well as whites until losing the battles that happened shortly after Little Big Horn.

Though the Lakota is one of the largest groups, so few Native Americans survive in the US that now many have taken to learning traditions from other tribes and living on other reservations (very few benefit from the casinos).

It is kind of like staying at a really cheap hostel. A Choctaw might move to New Mexico and live with a Blackfoot pen pall, get a job there (if there are any to be had), get married, and stay.
