Xp stopped booting with a system32 corrupt or missing error.I have tried to fix the problem using the original xp home disc.Everything loads great from the cd until I accet the licence agreement (f8) I then get a blue screen telling me there is a regestry error and windows has shut my computer down to prevent damage.I get to the same point if I try to use the repair option and choose windows version 1 at c:windows prompt. What can I do, I can't reformat or anything this is driving me nuts.

what you want to do is get the detail of that error. it will say a code like "in system32 at 0x00AA22FF". get that number, write it down, and google it. that will tell you at least which part of the computer is misbehaving.

you can also try a few things like Memtest86 (download from the internet) to diagnose any possible errors with your memory, or ScanDisk for hard drive problems (this one is included with windows).

If your HD is partitioned then just hit f10 on the boot,no disk is needed,if not then
You can format, use a system disk. If you do not have one get one for your OS, then put it into your a:/ drive and reboot your computer. If it bypasses your A:/ drive get into your Bios and reconfigure your BOOT UP drives to let your A:/ become a boot up device.
select the CD-ROM Support option with your OS disk in your cd-rom.
Then when you done that goto C:/ after you get the boot going to your A:/
At this point C:/ and all drives go up one drive to make a virtual drive available. C:/ is E and so on.
Now do this goto A:/
command should be-->A:/format C:\u\q or if you want a long format complete then ---> a:/format C:\u means unconditional
after format name it or just press enter, then type SETUP and hit enter.
Good luck :)

When you start up press the f10 button. From there you can go to reformat or do a recovery of your computer. You will not need the discs. Just follow instructions.

Remember one thing. If you do manage to get windows loaded. Load your antivirus programs first. Reason is when you get on the internet, you are naked to any viruses running around unless you have your antivirus program loaded. Then load your updates ASAP.

Also, IF you have registered your computer and it came with a legal copy of Windows you can call, and get a new set of recovery discs.
If your version of Windows XP did not come with the SP2 installed, get the SP2 disc while you are at it. Alone, it ran about $1.85. They basically charged me for postage only. great deal.

choose to install a new copy of windows. if it gives you the option to create a new partition, do that. if not, then pull the hdd out of the computer, back up your information by sticking it in another computer/external hdd enclosure, put it back in and install a clean OS
