You can record live through Audacity and other free software available from:
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/downloads.php
There are some applications form 'Applian' which also specifically do this and I think you can download a trial version from above.
You will need to work out which channel of your soundcard you are utilising, you may find some help for identifiying this at:
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/diy - though this deals with recording from outside your PC, there are some screen-shots showing how to locate a channel on the soundcard using software volume control.
I have done this so I know it can be done, unless it's not legal in which case I haven't ever done it at all and would never consider it LOL
