80% Red means the drive is seriously fragmented. You should not see scattered red after the drive is defragged. Are you letting it run it's full course? A fairly large hard drive (40Gb and larger) can take up to an hour to defrag with Windows defragger. I can recommend the free Auslogics Disk Defrag, which I use weekly. It defrags my HD in 10-20 minutes, and it takes Windows over an hour to defrag. You get a "pie chart" look at your hard drive before it starts, so you know how much of your drive is fragmented.

Red is the fragmented portion. You should defrag this drive. The reason it is red is because the file (for example is 5000 bytes long) is spread out among a few various locations on your drive, making it more difficult for the system to read it in a timely manner. Defragmenting causes it to move the file into a more readable "position" on the drive.

The red indicates fragmented files or folders, you should defrag this disk now.
It is not a bad practice to check your disk on a weekly basis and defrag accordingly.

I use Diskeeper which embeds into Windows, and the red areas are : fragmented files and folders.
In Other words it's pieces of data that is not placed in the best location on the disk compared to related pieces of data.
Fragmenting the drive will bring this data closer together.

you could use ashampoo magical defrag.it defrags for you by itself when your not using the pc or away from it.never have to worry about the files being scattered everywhere.it puts everything in order so the pc responds quicker
