Traditionally it referred to tickets on ships sailing from the UK to India. The best cabins were on the shady side of the ship which meant you travelled Port Out, Starboard Home. This is probably apocryphal and the SOED gives the first recorded use as 1918 and origin unknown. If it referred to the shipping tickets it would have been recorded long before 1918.

While there were a few acronyms around before the Second World War, there were hardly any from before the 20th century. Always treat with suspicion any word from before WWII that is claimed to be an acronym.

It means stylish, luxurious, and expensive, in a show-off kind of way, so it is not quite in the top bracket.

Typically, people who are rich but who haven't got used to it yet buy clothes and possessions which they think exhibit their affluence. They're "posh". Really rich upper-class people practise a sort of unobtrusive and faultless elegance which takes generations to grow into and recognise.

"Posh" means "upper class" or "refined" or "high quality".

Allegedly comes from ships to India where the best cabins were Port Out Starboard Home (these being the ones that would face land - e.g. Africa - throughout the journey)
