If it was 500 people would get excellent at hitting the double and treble twenties and would never see any other bit of the board. You have to make them work, so you need an odd number.

Odd number required in the scoring and when the game went pro the score went from 301 to 501 so the games were longer than 6 darts.

Darts is played counting backwards, dart players can do this easily, they have trouble counting forwards, therefore if the final score needs to be Nil, then 501 is as good a place to start as any, I used to play darts years ago, Mind numbing game that it is, it need to be played in a licenced premises, so intoxicating liquor can be drunk and make it mildly amusing, i.e. I don't know!
