August 2005 - Comsumer Report:
Paper towels
Best choices (excellent):
Bounty, $1.90 per 100 sheets
Kirkland Signature Premium (Costco), $1.10
Others tested:
Very good: Safeway Select Thirsty Ultra Absorbent, $1.70; Great Value (Wal-Mart) Oasis, $1.10; Brawny, $1.70; Publix Ultra Absorbent, $1.50.
Good: Winn-Dixie Ultra Strong, $1.70.
Fair: Albertson's Value Clean, 70¢; Trader Joe's 100% Recycled, 90¢; America's Choice (A&P), $1.
Poor: Kroger Everyday, 70¢; Stop & Shop Pure Power, $1.
The best sopped up both water and cooking oil thoroughly and quickly. Bounty was slightly stronger. Safeway was a close third overall. At the other extreme, Albertson's, Trader Joe's, America's Choice, Kroger, and Stop & Shop held much less liquid. They were also very flimsy.

Jan 2004 - Consumer Report
Bowling for Bounty
Bounty (left) and Brawny (right).
The claim: In a TV commercial that caught our eye several months ago, a Bounty paper towel is suspended in midair beside the “next leading 2-ply.” Each paper towel supports a bowling ball. Each towel is then drenched with water until one breaks and lets the ball plummet. The other keeps holding the ball. No points for guessing that “Bounty is the stronger quilted quicker picker upper.”
The check: We recreated the ad, pitting Bounty against Brawny Pure White with Scrubbing Circles, which our research indicated is the competitor. The ad itself notes that each bowling ball weighed 6 pounds and that two sheets of each towel were used, so we followed suit. We clamped the towels in embroidery hoops (they work the same way as the frames used in the ad) and poured 150 milliliters of water onto each ball.
The bottom line: A strike! Bounty held the ball; Brawny broke almost as soon as we poured the water. Whether that means anything to you may depend on how often you suspend 6-pound objects on wet paper towels. But hey, who’s quibbling? It’s always nice to see a paper towel--or an ad--that holds water.
