1024x768 is the norm.
There are also a good amount of 800x600 users.

Well, it depends on what standard you're talking about.
For web development the standard is always the lowest common denominator, which would be 1024x768 now.
For hardware standards it's a little different. LCD's (flat monitor) up to 19in = 1280x1024. Because of some technical stuff, that is their native resolution and anything lower or higher doesn't look nearly as sharp. CRT's (huge monitor) also have a native res, but they are better able to interpret other resolutions; so if you crank it up or down it still looks fairly sharp.
For an overall standard for every user, you're out of luck. It's best to stick with 1024x768 for project work, and for personal enjoyment I would recommend the native resolution on and LCD or whatever looks best to you on a CRT.

I know of a number of news sites in New Zealand that are designing their website for 1024x768.
They said that looking that their website stats, most people have their computer configured to at least this resolution.
There doesn't seem to be a definite standard any more, but I haven't seen any computers in the last year that have been less than 1024x768 so I think it's safe to say that's the "average" minimum.

I can tell you a lot of home computer users , are using the 1024x768 if their having an 15' or 17' monitor , and if they have an 19' monitor or higher, they preffer the 1280x1024 resolution

Well, I don't know of an official standard, but 1024x768 seems the norm for entry style machines. Of course there are still many places in the world where 640x480 or 800x600 would be welcomed...

Well it depends if you are using a high tech television.
1980 x 1080 is the best you can have.
1080 lines of full resolution is compatiable with the highest quality of HD programing.
