Depends what exactly you're looking to do... but you'll probably want to be in the Hollywood area. I'd start looking in zip code 90028 and adjacent. There are some good deals to be had in West L.A., if you're persistant -- check 90025 and surrounding, but keep it south of Wilshire. If the places that you think you might need to go a lot have 818 area codes, that's the San Fernando Valley. Check out North Hollywood, Studio City, Toluca Lake... just make sure your apartment has air conditioning!!

Backstage West puts out "welcome to L.A."-type issues two or three times a year - keep an eye on backstage.com to see when those are coming out. There are also some resources on the site, but you have to be a member.

Wherever you end up, make sure you have a Thomas Guide map book and/or a GPS navigation thingy. Even if you know where you're going, it helps to be able to come up with alternate routes on the fly.

Good luck!!

Well, here's the deal. There's really no ONE area of the city that's convenient to everything you'll need to get to. L.A. is a big, horizontal, sprawling kind of a place, and you had better get used to spending a lot of time behind the steering wheel.

Hollywood gives you access to a lot of TV studios and small theatres. Ditto Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena.

Personally, I favor the Westside or the South Bay. Given the fact that traffic in L.A. is inevitable, I'd rather be LIVING in a place where the lifestyle is more like a beach community and less like a congested urban environment. My advice? Live as close to the ocean as you can.

Auditions in LA are like LA - spread out all over the place so as long as you aren't thinking of Encino most areas are fine. That notwithstanding, Hollywood is OK (even if it is a dump), just over the hills Studio City and North Hollywood are cheaper and if you've got the beans, West Hollywood is the most pleasant.

Los Angeles is a VERY large city. Not only will you audition in L.A. you may audition in outlying areas. You must decide where you want to live. You may go from end of L.A. to the other for auditions and jobs. Ask your actor friends to recommend a convenient part of L.A. for you look for an apartment.
