a hamster is PERFECT!!! you should get a syrian hamster, as those are recommended for younger children. it costs about $16 dollars and you don't need to buy it a companion since they are solitary! it's cheaper than a parakeet, and if you buy a 4 lb. bag of food it'll last you about 5 months....all it needs is food, water, bedding, an exercise wheel and a cage..^^

Some people object to the idea of pet rats, but they are so much better than hamsters. Rats are highly intelligent and can be taught to come to their name, and they actually bond with their caretaker, unlike a hamster who will become tame to hold, but wont care who is holding it. I had a pet rat Pinky who knew her name, came when called, and would run out of her cage when I opened it, right into my sweatshirt pocket to be carried around.

A hamster. They are perfect for a child that age and relatively cheap to maintain -- not to mention loads of fun.

Well, speaking from personal expierience, I'd say a hamster. They are cute, furry, playful, and not that hard to take care of. :0)
