'What is the point of answering a question with "I don't know"?'
There is no point. People who answer like that, only answer on this site because:
1. they just want the points and they choose the easiest way to earn them
2. they have nothing better to do so they don't care about what they say as long as they have an occupation
3. they do it on purpose to irritate the asker or just to feel like they are 'cool'
4. they want to say something, and since they honestly don't know what to say, they say just that...
'But why would you waste all that time just to earn points on a questions forum?'
Lol. Firstly, I don't consider I'm wasting my time. For me, this site is a hobby. I come here when I'm bored and I have nothing to do or simply when I want to relax and have a bit of fun. Hobbies are never a waste of time as long as they make you happy, don't you think?
Plus, seeing as I'm an answerer, I sometimes manage to help people that come to this site. So I definitely don't consider this occupation a waste of time.
But if you were talking about those people that only give meaningless answers to get points... well. For them, it's all about the points. For them, this site and the levels they reach mean something. To some of them, reaching a higher level may mean that they are worthy or something like that. I know it sounds childish, but as long as it is their hobby and it makes them happy, maybe it's not such a terrible waste of time... ~

Its free points. They don't see it as wasting time because it takes just a couple of seconds to type "I don't know." and they get 2 pts. And usually these people are very intellegent so for them to find question that they may actually know an answer to may take several minutes. So essentially in their view they are not wasting points.
They are trying to get the most points in the shortest amount of time possible. This is why so many people have very short answers as well.

I don't know. I guess people want the two points. Of course, I think it makes more sense to gain those two points on a question you know the answers to or that you can easily find the answer to. That way, you have a chance of getting an additional 10 points for your answer.

Many people answer questions with I don't know just because they want to have 2 more points.
