Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Paul to Corinth

Hmm... toughie.
Well its easier if you split it down. In Greek there are several different words for love:
Agape - kind of like charity. Gives without expecting back, the type of love God has for people
Philia(spelling?) - Friendship
Eros - Sexual love
And at least one more I forget...

If you want to know what 'love' is, I suppose it must encompass al of these things. The common factor is that 'love' means the relationship (in the sense on a mathamatical, proportional relationship) between what is given and what is recieved in the personal relationship. (If that makes sense..?)

But of course the word itself is different in different languages, times, relationships... it can't be summed up as one thing in all cases.

I think it is just the optimum balance you find with another person, of giving and recieving. This balance is different for each person and each relationship, but noone wants to feel like they are giving and getting nothing back, same as they don't want to feel like they are being selfish (or if they do, it isn't love)

... I don't know how good an answer that is, or how close to the 'truth' I got, but I've now got some idea of what I think, so thanks!

There are many types of 'love' that we all engage in despite our differences in age. We may say we 'love' someone in a romantic sense, caring sense or an attachment sense so as to gain approval or to be cared for. Love in those senses apply in different scenarios and situations. So to really try to pinpoint a single definition of the word is quite difficult to do and to apply just one meaning to it will do the word an injustice.

A liking shared between a person and an item or another that can never be broken but only forgotten. Where the person will give thereself up for what it is so that it will not be harmed.

A liking that makes two people come together and never leave another even if they fight and can't stand the other.

I found LOVE and I know what it finally means....Comfort and Happiness! You just feel like it FITS in your existing life.

If romantic or friendship, it's still the same! If there is hurt, sadness and loneliness - it's NOT LOVE!

Love should be easy! You shouldn't cry or be hurt during the dating period of a relationship. If that happens....move on, quickly! Love is Patient, Love is Kind....you know the rest!!

Listen to me, I found my one true love!!
I stopped wasting my time on love that hurt me!

I found a love that really matters and deserves my love and attention back! He thinks I am the best thing that has happened to him. And I know it's the truth for me! He has changed my life because he really cares about my heart. He really cares if I am happy or not!

Don't settle for anything less. You deserve a great LOVE!!

"Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, and it is not proud. Love is not rude, is not selfish, and does not get upset with others. Love does not count up wrongs that have been done. Love takes no pleasure in evil but rejoices over the truth. Love patiently accepts all things. It always trusts, always hopes, and always endures."

I will take a stab at the realtionship kind. I think its certain moments of two people connecting where they realize there is something bigger than the both of them going on. These moments tend to be brief because love is so beautiful its almost too much for the human body to take. So we stay together to contiuously meet in these moments.

That's simple. God is love. There is no greater love than God's who first loved us and gave His only begotten Son for us that we might be free from sin. Read below why He is the author of love for humanity and instructs man to love one another to show His love.
