Energy is not created or destroyed, but can be changed to different forms to be used to do work.

So we can take chemical energy stored in fuel and convert it in to mechanical energy to drive a piston in our engine which will get us from one place to another, often giving off lots of thermal energy in the process.

Or we can take nuclear energy, convert it into thermal energy to heat water to steam that drives a turbine to produce electrical energy that we can convert into heat energy to make toast in our toaster.

In no case is energy "created" only converted from potential (stored) energy to kinetic energy and in some cases back again.

Two fun facts:

1. Whenever we convert potential energy to do something, but part of that energy goes to doing something else we do not want it to do, we call that ENTROPY.

2. Matter is the ultimate potential energy source as shown by Einstein who related m (mass) to E (energy) in his famous equation.

RE:
What does the law of Conservation of energy mean?

Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can change from one form to the other, e.g. mechanical energy to heat or electrical energy; electrical energy to mechanical energy or heat etc.The sum total of all forms of energy remains constant. But this was regarded strictly true before the emergence of the 'Special Theory of Relativity' according to which mass and energy are inter convertible. So energy can be created at the expense of mass.Examples: Energy from the Sun in the Fusion Process, Energy produced by the Atomic Bomb during Fission Process.

the law of the conservation of energy means that energy can not be created or destroyed. only the form of the energy can change. remember that matter is a form of energy (E = mc^2).

God created the perfect form of energy in humans. Cold fusion. We eat, our cells break down the input of food, and release energy that sustains a human body without sky high temperatures. Now if only our cars would do that...

energy does not "vanish", it always have to go somewhere, typiclly heat.

e.g. light bulb converts just 5% of energy into light, the rest 95% goes into heat. Or a car engine - transforms about 30% of energy into motion, the rest is heat of engine and exhaust.

it means energy is created and destroyed at an equal rate
