If the controller is blinking, that means that it is not connected to the 360, in which case he/she should hold the connect button the controller, amd the 360. If it is swirling around the light, then the batteries are low, but, he/she can also bring up the menu (press the button) and check the battery life. (Top left-hand corner.)

was just happening to me (still was working) but I couldn't stop since I was doing sickly good in a game of halo (5 sticks!) and like the other two said, the controller needs recharging or fresh batteries....
