this car is 9 or 10 years old by this time in it life you should have replaced the battery twice, a new battery is only good for 5 years ! so you need a new battery . now the alternator , with the car running check the voltage at the battery , using a simple d.c. meter the voltage should be 14.6 volts D.C. if you see anything less than that , say 12 to 13 volts , the alternator is not charging your old battery , get new or rebuilt alternator, and before installing new battery charge it up , now run the car , check your voltage.

start vehicle. very carefully touch the center needle bearing cap with a metal object. be careful not to touch the wires or the binding posts.. the binding posts are energized with 12 volts. while charging, the bearing cap should attract a metal object. there are .99 cent hydrometers at most auto part stores. these test the specific gravity of the battery liquid. You will need to remove the caps on the battery though...Check each of the cells individually. If you have 1 dead cell, this means that ONLY 1 CELL IS 1/4 CHARGE, or less, this cell will drain the entire battery. The tests detailed above will test the alternator.

take you're car to a mechanc and have an AVR test preformed, they will be able to diagnoses the problem that way. DO NOT EVER DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING, with all the elsectrical in the cars now you will fry at least one modual, fues, relay, or something, it may not be noticabele for months before you notice what has happened. Take it to a mechanic and have an AVR test done. with an AVR test the mechanic will also be able to tell if there is something else in the system that is causing the batter to go dead. ie. bad ground, borken wire ect.

DO NOT disconnect any cables while the car is running, its an old school test and can cause a lot of damage on newer vehicles, if you can jump-start the car and run it all day without dying than the alt. is working, if the alt. stops working the battery light should come on, headlights will be dim, if your car has 100000 miles or more chances are the alt. needs replacing,

You test the alternator with a voltmeter. When the car is not running it should be 12 volts, when the car is running it should be 13.5 to 15 volts. Buy the voltmeter at radio shack.

A QUICK WAY IS TO START THE CAR AND DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE ON THE BATTERY IF THE CAR SHUTS OFF ITS THE ALTERNATOR. IF NOT DRIVE THE CAR OR BRING THE BATTERY TO A LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE LIKE AUTOZONE AND THEY WILL CHECK THE BATTERY FOR FREE. IF YOU CAN DRIVE THE CAR THERE THEY WILL CHECK THE ALTERNATOR AND THE BATTERY FOR FREE.
