I would say use the fleece, for a baby blanket I would get a yard maybe a little over as you will be cutting all around it, with the cuts I basically cut the length of the scissors but cut out a 2x2 on the corners and use that as your guide. I also recommend doing the pattern on one side and solid on the other, we have a bunch of these at home. FYI for an adult one I use 2 1/2 yards so it covers head to toe with a little extra.

It looks really nice to do a pattern on one side, and a solid color that fits with the pattern on the other side. You can use any measurements you like. Fleece really is the best, any other fabric would look funny, feel funny, or shread at the ties.

I rarely sew, but don't stores sell cotton fabric with a design stamped on the whole thing? It would be in the size of a crib. You'd need fabric for the back and something for the inside.

just get 12" more of cloth in both directions then you want the blanket to be. fleece is best because it's warmest, but you could use something esle, too. cut 6" in, and square knot the material. each tassle should be about an inch to an inch and a half wide. tell your friend congradulations! good luck!

The fleece will kind of stick together so you don't have to worry about it falling apart. I also found a way to finish these blankets by using a crochet hook and weaving them together for a better finished look. This was on pinterest, check on the web for other ways to do these.
