Was it ever a great place to live? I must have missed that period. Maybe it was before my time....

I'd go for no. The current government is really screwing things up (amongst other things).

1) Unemployment, inflation and interest rates and energy bills are rising.
2) The economy is not doing as well as Mr Brown thinks it is.
3) Salaries are relatively low, unless you have some great job in The City and living costs (and taxes!) are very high. In spite of this (high taxes), the NHS, public transport and education are spiralling downwards. The governments response to this is of course, privatisation. Yeah right, like running everything for the sake of profits and shareholders really help the average citizen...
4) We live in a police state and a society under constant surveillance, yet crime (especially violent crime) appear to be on the up as well.
5) No one seems to respect anyone else, and there is hardly a sense of community anymore. People are utterly selfish, rude and highly inconsiderate. They are not able to think beyond themselves. It's evident in everyday life. Just drive down a road and you'll experience British life in its worst form.

Do I need to go on?

I love where I live but thats because I ran screaming from England to the Welsh hills.
British government tries to pull the wool of the british eyes that we are one of the best countries to live in in the world. That's why the world is trying to get in! But the british can see through it and they want out!!!
We are subject to high taxes and low wages, a health service that makes it healthier to stay outside than to go in for treatment! A government that tells the people whatever it wants to hear but does what only the Lords tell them to. The worst weather in the world, sunshine is such a rarity that everyone rejoices for the few moments when we do see it.
But on the other hand I'm a single mum living on benefits and I'm ok. So I should just shut up and be thankfull, not many countries would pay for me to just be a mum.

Yes, UK is a great place to live. No extremes of weather, strong economy, plenty of work and the potential to prosper if you are willing to work hard, a beacon for the arts and music, low crime rate (compared to most countries), no poisonous spiders, tolerant and caring people, very cosmopolitan night life and the best beer in the world. And despite what you think, our income tax and VAT are some of the lowest in Europe.

Could the 'no' answerers say where they think is better? Then go there?

I really don't know anymore. On one hand I don't think it's so great as in today's society we have to deal with racism that's being fuelled by the terrorist threats. The criminals seem to be getting off lighter all the time and when they are in prison they seem to have it easy. There is drugs and crime everywhere.

But on the other hand I love it and I'm proud of being British. We have the best sense of humour and when things get tough we stand together and you can't keep us down for long. We have a brilliant music and film industry and are up there with the best in fashion. We also have the privelege of free speech which many countries don't have. I love British culture and I just couldn't imagine living elsewhere.

i'm particular the U.ok. is a huge place to stay. slightly huge brothery, with all of the CCTV observing each thing you do in public. yet that's not this variety of undesirable element, i think. You seize criminals interior the act all of the time. and you have some astonishing women over there. i'm charmed, completely. however the U. S. is greater advantageous, i could say. in spite of all of the present turmoil, this place remains the land of danger.

no. not if you're young, and i'll tell u why:

1. no funding for higher education. only loans to get u in huge amounts of debt.
2. sky high house prices mean you can't buy a house, unless you have a fantastic high flying job
3. to get said job, u need to go to university.
4. to go to university, you need to pay for it.
5. to pay for it, you either need a) rich parents, b)a willingness to get into debt
6. bear in mind that if you choose the last one, you won't be able to buy a house until you get out of £30000 debt prob at the age of 45.
7. They are making the driving test harder so you have to spend more on lessons and tests, in addition to the extortion of other car fees.
8. its hard to get a good job if you don't drive
9.its hard to drive if you don't get a good job, so u need to go to university

do you see how this is going? maybe i should just get myself up the duff and get my own house and benefits
