I'm thinking of having my navel pierced but I want to ensure that its a good step. First of all I want to know if it signifies anything other than a fashion statement. It takes six months to heal I was told I should avoid chlorine, but is it okay to go to the beach (i really love it, I go at least once per week) because I read somewhere that may promote an infection. And any other general information you think I should know will help greatly. I'm a stickler for analyzing everything before I make a decision.

you should get it pierced during the winter time so you can avoid swimming. it can easily be infected so you should be careful. be sure to wash it and clean it every day. i think it's a fashion statement but i promise you after a couple of months, you'll forget you even have one.

I also wanted to do it, but was told by many boy-friends that it's such a played out trend. I still like the look, but I prefer being different then having something every other girl has. It's totally up to you though. As far as the whole infection thing, my girlfriend got hers done during the winter and since it was so covered up ( i heard it needs air to breathe and the best time is summer) well her's became very infective and gross. A bubble grew on her piercing and looked like a giant pimple (another reason I changed my mind lol ) Just becareful and follow instructions the piercer gives you and you should be ok if you go on to do it.

I got my navel pierced in the 90's and it got ripped out & left a scar that I still have to this day. Now I regret ever getting it done. It's especially annoying when I wear a bikini. My advice is don't do it.
