The court will only impose an immediate sentence of prison for wilful refusal to pay. It is far more likely that you will receive a suspended sentence and perhaps be asked to return to court after a few months to see how things are going. If you refuse to cooperate with the court, then you can be sent to prison, but they will first give you a chance to show willing at least. I have known cases where people refused to pay in any circumstances and were sent to prison, but courts are reluctant, as I say, to do this without letting them have an opportunity to pay as best they can. The term of imprisonment imposed will depend on the court, but I doubt if it will be more than 28 days in your case.

You would be better off arranging to pay it off in small amounts (as little as £5 a month), you really dont want to end up in prison, the dock is bad enough! I saw someones £200 fine cancelled in exchange for 24 hours in police custody but that was time already served. Just be honest with the judge and you may be pleasantly supprised.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but they can send you down for non-payment of any fine. But, and this is the pain in the butt, I think you still owe the money after you've done the time.

You really need to speak to a lawyer before you get there in the morning.

obviously you don't have much of a life if you're willing to go to prison instead of paying a fine!
