A moon and stars were used in colonial times to designate the sex of the outhouses. Originally the moon was for women and the star was for the men. But the men's outhouse was usually in such disrepair, everyone wanted to use the women's outhouse. ...so, eventually they quit using the stars altogether.
also, moon and sun used...
Having a door, sometimes decorated with a small crescent moon-shaped hole [1]. The significance of the moon has never been fully explained. In Germany, a heart-shaped hole is traditional. In recent centuries, the finer inns began offering "his" and "hers" outhouses. But, because most people were illiterate, symbols were used on the outhouses to show which was "his" and which was "hers". Pictures of the sun and moon were the obvious choice. From ancient times, the "sun" had been a symbol of all that was masculine and the "moon" of all that was feminine.

So how come only the moon was left? Do the boys just have to use the wall, or a hole in the woods?
Yeah, I think the male/female sun/moon symbolism is right, but I'm not sure why only the moon stayed around. Maybe since there's a moon every time you use the outhouse?

"The woodshed was often a lean-to attached to the schoolhouse, but the most accepted arrangement was to place it between the schoolhouse and the privy, with a fence separating the boys' entrance from the girls'. The ancient designation of privy doors was to saw into them a sun (for boys' toilet) and a moon (for girls' toilet)."
