I got a lawn mower from a friend who had bought it brand new and used it maybe 6 times last summer. In order to get it into the car I had to detach the bar handle and lay it ontop of the mower. While doing this the cord wrapped nearly completely inside the housing. When we tried to put the handle back on, the pull cord refused to budge. Any ideas? My husband is going to take a look but I was wondering if anyone experienced had some insight so the mower doesn't end up broken and my husband doesn't lose an arm.

If the spring inside broke, it wouldn't recoil at all....

Its either tangled and jammed inside (have to take the shroud off to fix) or the flywheel brake is on like stated above....

BTW, if you put it in, spark plug down.... you might have hydrolocked it with oil..... try it without the spark plug in and see if it helps the situation! if it does, turn it over quickly to remove whats in there... and check the air filter for oil on it and replace if it is... and change the oil.

I don't see why the rope housing would have to be removed to replace the handle. Is the new handle perhaps in the way of the correct direction you need to pull the rope? You may be pulling at an angle instead of straight out of the housing and have a lot of rope friction. I hope it is that simple. Hard to give advice on something like this without seeing it. Others are right about the brake. If you didn't reinstall it you need to. WARNING! DO NOT TURN THE BLADE OF A MOWER WITHOUT FIRST DISCONNECTING THE SPARK PLUG!!!!

Sounds like the spring inside that recoils the cord broke or came off. Hope your husband is mechanically incline cause spring can be a pain..... If not, take to your local lawn mower shop. Cheaper than buying new one.

GOOD LUCK

If you have to pull the handle down to release the brewal the fly wheel will trun and the cord will come out.
Now if the rope is tangled inside the flyWheel then you have to remove the top and unwind it loose. It is very rare that a cord will unwrap form the pully and wrap on the fly wheel.

You can remove the pull start mechanism rather easily. After removal it should be easy to see whats binding the rope.
