It depends on the audience. If Nugent was in France when he made the comment, then he was probably booed, but if he was in the United States, people probably enjoyed the joke about French people.

As a veteran guitarist/performer, I say that Nugent found that flamboyant rhetoric was as profitable as playing guitar, but required a lot less effort and brain power.
