This is the pelvis expanding and getting ready for the baby to come down the birth canal. If she wants some relief she can place a heat pack on her back but make sure it's not too hot.
This is all normal. Her body is changing to accommodate for the stress that will be put on her body during labour. The body is an amazing thing and this expansion will work in her favour.
If she just doesn't feel right about it she should go and get it checked out but I am pretty sure the doctor will say the same thing.
All the best

From talking to some co-workers a few months ago, I think that this must be very common... I had the same thing. Luckily for her, she won't have to deal with it too much longer.
Just tell her to try to make herself comfortable... I use to prefer sitting on a firm couch, leaning to the side (kinda propping myself on the arm, allowing most of my weight to be shifted to the side) Getting up and walking around more often should help too.
Is she taking her prenatal vitamins, eating healthy, and getting plenty of calcium? I have spoken to several women who say they cracked their tailbones durring pregnancy due to the baby taking calcium from their systems. I think I did it too, but I didn't want to see the doctor about it - it's not like they can really do anything for it.
The baby could also be on a nerve and adding pressure to that area as it is getting ready to be born. Offer to go for a walk with her, if the weather is bad try doing it at the store. And tell her to try sitting on the furniture more or putting a pillow on the floor to sit on. I sometimes felt better if I sat with my knees and lower legs on the floor and my backside on my feet. - No pressure on the tailbone that way. But it isn't really good for the knees.
Congratulations to your friend :)

It can be a common problem for some pregnant women. She needs to try and sit on a cushioned seat whenever she can. She can also buy one of those inflatable rings to sit on. (that's what they have you sit on when you injure your tailbone) It takes all the pressure off of it. Also, not to scare her too much...but giving birth can sometimes fracture the tailbone if there is alot of pressure there during delivery. I wish her the best of luck.. I've had 3 children, so I feel her pain. Tell her to keep off her feet whenever possible to keep the pressure off that area as well. :)

This is normal because it is the weight and pressure from her baby pushing into the birth canal. She needs to put a pillow under her if she plans on sitting on the floor. It happened to me, but it will go away after the baby is born.

is it in her tailbone--or focused more toward a hip?
hip/butt is the sciatic nerve-- that is probably what she is having--there isnt anything that can touch it, lol
the best rememdy is for her to lay down for a half hour on the oppisite side of the one that is hurting.
if it is just her tailbone--the fact of her sitting on the floor at 9 months along is probably it.
Im about to deliver any day now, I can hardly even look at the floor let alone sit on it, lol

I had this as good. I went to a chiropractor that practiced the activator process. It's performed with out bone popping and simplest took me two visits to get it labored out. I under no circumstances had the suffering come again.

may be pressure as the baby is slowly moving toward the birth canal at the end of pregnancy term.
