I remember this song so well, I recorded it off the radio and probably have it on a cassette somewhere. Probably late 1970s as opposed to the 1980s. It was Eddie Howell and it was called "Hatcheck Girl". I always thought he was singing "Fell in love with a hatcheck girl in Reno2 (as in the gambling city in Nevada).
The chorus went something like, "I'm in love, yes I'm in love, with a funny little hatcheck girl from Reno, I only wish she knew"
I've searched on Yahoo but can't find any lyrics or even a referance to the song.
But no, it isn't a figment of your imagination!
Oh....wait....I found the casstette. It's all a bit wobbly and fuzzy, but here are the lyrics, as far as I can make out:
She took a job as a hatcheck girl in Reno (at Reno's?),
To try her luck at the club where the stars hang out.
Always had this crazy dream to appear on a picture screen.
Only hope her dreams don't let her down.
She told her friends she's a hat check girl at Reno.
And she could well be famous in a week or two.
Unafraid to be alone, but it's a long long way back home.
Only hope her dreams can come true.
I'm in love, yes I'm in love,
With a funny little hat check girl at Reno,
There's little I can do.
I'm in love, yes I'm in love,
With a crazy little hat check girl at reno,
I only wish she knew.
I gave my heart to the hat check girl at Reno
She didn't even take it from my hand.
Looked at me with smiling eyes,
I did my best to improvise.
If only I could make her understand.
'Cos I'm in love, I'm in love, etc
Then one day she had a lucky break,
Played a leading lady on a Broadway stage.
Hit the headline overnight,
The little girl was dynomite
Did you know a star was born today?
So give a hand to the hat check girl at Reno,
The one who took the ticket to my heart.
Only she could turn the key,
Come on bring it back to me,
Or you know I'll surely fall apart.
Oh I'm in love, etc.
Hope this brings back as good a memory as it did for me!
All the best.
