I'm not sure if you're talking about the medieval Gothic movement, or the current subculture, but in a nutshell, here it is. The Gothic architectural and artistic style that started in Europe around 1100 was seen as naturalistic by the Romantics in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Romantics idealized Gothic architecture as being rational and natural, two of the Enlightenment's greatest ideals. This was an oversimplification of Gothic art and architecture, and more of a response to the overblown art of the Rococo and Baroque styles than anything else. The modern Gothic subculture is a extension of the Romantic ideals, and thus it resurrected the Gothic name.
