Hiccups are caused by the seizing of the diaphragm. The diaphragm will pretty much jump, trying to get air into the lungs...because the body is saying you need more oxygen (not that she is not breathing enough). Babies tend to drink fast, and slow their breathing. It's normal, you shouldn't be worried. Maybe try putting her on a tippy cup (with a valve) or a slower flow nipple on her bottle. My daughter had hiccups after every meal...and she even had them regularly before she was born (at least 10 times a day). Wouldn't worry. There are times though, that if somebody hiccups nonstop...i mean all day every day with no break...that could be bad. That is usually caused by infection and/or imflammation of organs in the belly. If her hiccups are non-stop or severe, take her in to the doctor, and they may want a CAT scan. But like I said, it has to be very bad to be a problem.

Normal because she is swallowing air. When I took my son in for his 2 week checkup his Dr actually asked me was he getting hiccups I told him yes and he told me to give him water. I questioned him about this seeing as everything you read in magazines and he assured it me it was completely safe and yes babies get all the fluid they need from formula but a little water wont hurt anyone.

hmmm.... maybe because you baby is only 5 months old and according to the AAP is not recommended to give infants water since they already get enough water from their formula. At that stage try putting a little teaspoons, they should not have water until at least 9 mos. I have two kids a 10 yr. and a 5 months, if you want I can have them send you a letter of recommendation lol
