When you go to the fabric store you can tell the person at the cutting desk that you want the blanket to be crib size and she will know what size to cut it. My mother-in-law made me a fleece blanket that was much bigger than crib size, and it was difficult to use for such a small baby. You probably shouldn't make it any bigger than crib size. For the tie blankets you are talking about, fleece fabric would probably be best because most other fabrics would fray. Have fun making the blanket! I loved handmade gifts the best.

I think for a baby you might use a nice flannel, but you would have to probably have a thin lining. I think there are different thicknesses of fleece. You might try Joann's Fabrics or So Fro Fabrics. Also, to get more answers, you might post this question in the Hobbies and Crafts section. Interesting question. Good luck with your project.

The fleece will kind of stick together so you don't have to worry about it falling apart. I also found a way to finish these blankets by using a crochet hook and weaving them together for a better finished look. This was on pinterest, check on the web for other ways to do these.

you can make it any size you want.
and fleece works good because its easy to work with and easier to tie.
one side should be a solid color, and the other one a pattern.
