We've been doing this sort of thing a lot in my history class. England had many reasons for wanting more land.
1. They didn't want others to get it
2. Natural resources in those countries (especially India)
3. The power to influence other countries with their size (There is a quote somewhere, but i can't remember it exactly. Something like there was a time the sun never set on the British Empire)
4. There's definitely more (probably some having to do with nationalism), but why don't you try checking your textbook for more.

One main reason was the Enclosure Movement. A new way of processing sheep wool became available, so the English pushed poor workers off their farms to make room for grazing sheep. Those rural workers ended up unemployed and turned to crime. As a result, they were sent to jail.

The jails started to get really full, so the prisoners (mostly those farmers pushed off their land) were offered a deal- they could go populate the colonies and get out of jail free. They wanted colonies to get rid of the extra (expensive) prisoners.

That's what I remember from the SS lecture a few weeks ago, anyways. I wasn't listening that much, though...

The crown wanted more power for England- competition with other countries especially with the Dutch.
England also experienced overpopulation and there were many poor farmers without land.

well yes one was more land, another was for trading, owning more colonies got you more resources, raw materials, that were sent back to england and manufactured into goods... it was better because they wouldnt have to rely on trade as much and they could sell their stuff to other countries for more money. also world domination was HUGE part... its a reason in itself
