There are so many , all of them monsters in there own way some even did some good as well as bad , but in all of history even on the dark ages has there been one so hands on quite like Saddam , looking back at his reign if you can call it that , there is not one thing that he did that was in any way a benifit to Iraq , true he allowed his tribe the Sunni to rape pillage steal and kill people from other tribes with impunity as long as he got his cut , and get rich in the procsess , from there point of view he was great that is why they are trying to return to the status quo now, But Sadam indulged in the torchering and killing people himself personaly for fun , most dictators watched or orderd it to be done, even Hitler did some good for Germany
but then destroyed any good that he did , Stalin murderd more but stayed away from the nasty stuff, Tambalin murderd as many but buit a nation that lasted a long time, The Romans killed more than all of them put together but left behind a legercy that the world benefitted from, most manicidal dictators tried to enhance there nation Saddam did none of these things everything he did was for his own indulgance and safety , and to that end he had an easy death that he did not deserve

Mao Zedong, who killed about 70 million people *in peacetime*! It's absurd to claim Genghis Khan killed more, as someone else did - think of the small population of the world back then. It would have been impossible.

Now imagine a German leader started praising Hitler - he'd be denounced as mad and shunned as a pariah. Yet China's government continues to hold Mao up as a great hero and the West refuses to say a word about it.

You've been reading too many GW Bush speeches if you think Saddam Hussein is one of the worst ever.

Stalin and Hitler compete very closely for the title of worst dictator in history. Hitler sparked a war that resulted in 50 million deaths and the destruction of Europe. His failings as a military commander also allowed Eastern Europe and part of Central Europe to be dominated by the communists for almost fifty years. Stalin ordered the purges of the Communist party and Red Army in the mid-1930's that resulted in the deaths or ostracism of millions of people. He also ordered millions more killed during his reign. More millions died due to starvation and lack of medical facilities. Both dictators sparked the deaths of many millions of people during their reigns. Which one was worse? It is impossible to determine.

1) Hitler - he was the most "successful" dictator, in the sense of the power he gained. He was a powerful speaker. He brain washed the German people with national pride and propaganda, turning them against their Jewish neighbors. He killed millions. Those with great power are feared.

2) Stalin - Purged millions.

Hitler was not a dictator. Every country will always act in their own best interests, if these two men had been victorious in their plans, the word "dictator" would not exist, it has been spun by western goverments and society to criminalise these men. In Hitlers own words "an army does not exist to perserve peace".

In terms of the numbers killed it now seems certain that Mao was the "worst" of the twentieth century - but by the time you get to those kind of figures a million or two more corpses matters little. It is possible, but hard to prove, that Genghis Khan was responsible for even more deaths that Mao - but some of the sources of his career are suspect. But he to was a mass killer.

Out of the two - Hitler. There have been worse. Possibly Stalin, but then there are a fair few contenders.

how easily we forget our history. Joe Stalin sent millions to the gulags... Mao did unspeakable things during the cultural revolution, Pol Pot did year one on cambodia... (watch the killing fields)

prior to them our history is fair seeping with the blood of innocents, spilled by dictators and invading forces...one persons head of state is no doubt anothers opressor.

hitler only did six or so million, bareley enough to get him on the leaderboard... we identify dictators by their actions, and the consequences...

I would have thought that Ghengis Khan deserves a mention as a dictator.
