I love this question!
No, Vampires don't exist (never did)
The myths of vampires were influenced by decaying bodies on which teeth and nails "appear to grow" on (this is just the tightly pulling, drying skin). Not to mention, gasses in a decomposing body can force blood/fluids out the mouth and such - see 1st link).
Keep in mind this was happening at a time in history when few people understood death/medical conditions very well and there was little medical technology. Many people died "mysteriously", and survivors needed to explain it somehow. (further, a few strange conditions exist to freak out superstitious folk; Catalepsy and Porphyria to name two)
As for those that claim they ARE vampires (believing with no evidence is one thing, CLAIMS need to be supported):
Well, they are basing this off of a movie, that was inspired by a book, that was itself (very loosely) based off of the myths (with one historical tyrant thrown in; Prince Vlad III)...
Hmm, well, when any of them can do something supernatural, I'll be impressed. But until then their claim is not supported, so they are MISTAKEN.
I say, either prove yourselves to be vampires with the Million Dollar Challenge (see link) or stop claiming such nonsense.
NO money = You're mistaken... no argument

The info that Vaughn gave isn't completely true...not all vampires live like this some but most don't. Some are "goth" and like to dress like a "movie vampire" a lot don't. The ones you've seen on "The secret lives of Vampires" aren't that great either...not bad but not true to their condition...they try to play it up a bit for TV and not to inform the public...Vampirism is really more a a burden than anything.... Also the consumption of blood(which a lot vampires don't do either) is not recreational. It's how they get the extra energy they need to survive...let me explain more
A Vampire is simply a being that can't create enough of it's own spiritual energy to support itself, so it must get it from another source. They are believed to have a hole or damaged spot in their astral/spiritual body. This is a lot like a paper cup with a hole in it. You continue to pour water into it but it slowly leaks all of it out. No matter how much water you pour into it, the cup never stays full. This is the technical definition of what exactly a Vampire is. So most feed on raw energy of the spirit some do drink blood....they are not immortal but some do heal rapidly and rarely get sick....some even live for a while longer...They also do tend to be photosensitive so sun hurts but doesn't kill...garlic and holy water don't do anything but because many have really keen senses the smell of garlic may be unpleasant....they die just like anyone else in the same ways....
Most vamps would classify themselves as either Sanguinarian(blood drinking) or Psi(energy draining) both are different ways of accomplishing the same thing...getting prana or life force energy to keep them well...though some may claim the sang and psi are different they are one in the same..it's just the different ways they prefer to feed that sets them apart...nothing more. sang or psi is a choice. any Vampire can feed on any type of energy...
They are not role playing or crazy..thy just have a spiritual deficiency ...they're not sexy or psycho killers or anything like in movies...they're people and are just as varied and diverse and unique as any other group of people

The vampires who are "real" aren't necesarily the same as the Count Dracula walking undead that you're thinking of. There's a vampire subculture of people who are still alive, but who connect to the vampire mythos and so like to think of themselves as vampires. They drink blood recreationally (from willing doners, and only tiny amounts), they are night people, they dress Goth, and some of them have even had sharp caps put on their incisors to look more vampiric. Those are probably the people interviewed on the History Channel. Here are a few links:
http://www.sanguinarius.org/

http://www.angelfire.com/nj/njarv/main.html
As far as I know, the main differences between these "real" vampires and the ones of the movies are 1) they don't attack people, and 2) they never died, and thus are no immortal.
But any real vampires here on line are welcome to argue with me; I admit I'm an outsider to all this.

As i answered before in a question too similar to this:
Some people have been reading too many books by Anne Rice and Bram Stocker.
Vampires are little animals batlike.
But there are some people who are into Voodoo and that kind of dark and black magic stuff who practise, or practised, something called "Vampirism" which consists of drinking blood, but they all ended up getting AIDS.
As for inmortality and all that, come on, that´s impossible.

nicely for one, garlic, crosses do not even damage vampires. demonstrate screen writers made that up looong in the past. And vampires have a mirrored image. The seem in images. Secondly, in the experience that your a vampire, then your fang the teeth or w.e will be substantial sharp. :P And thirdly, you would no longer belive, yet im a vampire. My call grow to be originaly Beth, yet I were given bored of that about 20 years in the past, so I replaced my call to Zaria. [=

vampire bats are real
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_bat
people who think they are vampires usually have a vampire fetish and have taken it a bit too far. They identify themselves as vampires, because they have talked some other person into letting them "bite" them or drink their blood. (ok, so, ew.). But are they the "classic" soul-less immortal vampire draining people of their blood, yadda yadda, no.
Belief in vampires persists to this day. While some cultures preserve their original traditions about the immortal, most modern-day believers are more influenced by the fictional image of the vampire as it occurs in films and literature and Buffy.

Yes. Any human that craves blood is considered a vampire. It
is a real medical condition that some unfortunate people have.
The most famous vampires in real life were Vlad the Impaler(real
name was Count Vlad Dracula) and Countess Dracula/ The Blood Countess(real name was Countess Elizabeth Bathory).
These vampires were just evil personified. They didn't have a medical reason for their lust for blood, theirs was just pure evil.

I don't know, they could.
Weird...
I sort of do believe in that, cause I have two perfectly in line pimples on my neck. And every full moon I feel a weird sensation in my body, like I'm turning into a werewolf or something. I don't end up turning into it, but I seem to stare at the moon for ages.
and I like the taste of my own blood, but I'm not going to try someone else's.

There are two of them that exist...The blood fetish kind, the ones that sharpen their teeth and use razor blades to suck each others blood and the one in the hispanic countries that just suck all the blood out of cattle. i can't remember the name of that blood sucker, but they only do it to cattle and they suck all the blood out. I think this blood sucker might be know as a werewolf to.
