A glass or two once a week, sure. More, no.
"The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recently conducted a large study including 400,000 American women, all of whom had consumed alcohol during pregnancy. Not a single case of fetal alcohol syndrome occurred and no adverse effects on children were found when consumption was under 8.5 drinks per week. 3
A recent review of research studies found that fetal alcohol syndrome only occurs among alcoholics. The evidence is clear that there is no apparent risk to a child when the pregnant woman consumes no more than one drink per day. 4"

"Lipp and Whitten, whose "To Your Health" was published in 1995, are among an increasing number of doctors and researchers who feel that pregnant women have no reason to fear drinking a glass of wine every day. As revealed by contributing editor Thomas Matthews in the August 31, 1994 issue of the "Wine Spectator" magazine which was devoted largely to this controversy, "there is even new research that shows that moderate drinking during pregnancy may actually help the development of the child after birth."
No one questions the fact that the consumption of large amounts of alcohol during pregnancy can harm the fetus. It has been well established, for example, that the children of women who drink more than 3 - 4 glasses of wine daily show significant decreases in birth weight and length than those of women who drink 1 - 2 glasses daily, and it is generally accepted that having five or more drinks per day is especially dangerous to the fetus. Here, however, agreement ends, and Genevieve Knupfer of the Alcohol Research Group in Berkeley, California says that part of the problem comes about because many of the studies that reported adverse effects on the fetus used imprecise methodology. In several studies, for example, researchers arbitrarily defined "heavy drinkers" as those women who consumed more than one glass of wine daily.
Feeling even more strongly, Dr. Michael Samuels of New York City's Doctor's Hospital says that the data has been "turned around for the purpose of frightening women"..."

There has never been a "safe" amount of alcohol determined for pregnancy. It is absolutely NOT OK to have alcohol during the first trimester when all baby's major organ systems are developing. During the third trimester, a sip or two of wine in the last week or two probably would not hurt anything, but two glasses a week could definitely have an effect on the baby - the effects of alcohol build up over time. Babies' underdeveloped livers cannot process alcohol like an adult's. If you want what is best and safest for your baby, you really should not drink any alcohol while pregnant. Think of your child's best interest - it won't be the last time you'll have to sacrifice your own desires for your child. That's what parenthood is about.

According to all reaserches that has been done one glass of wine or beer a day {not more than 3 times a week} doesn't harm the fetus at all. Most of people I know had a glass of wine time to time while pregnant and their kids are fine. My doctor also says that if it is not a regular heavy drinking, it is OK {I am 36 weeks}

I would have a few sips at night when my husband had a glass of wine. I did that throughout my pregnancy. A sip here or there should be fine, or maybe a 1/2 glass, but research will say not to at all.

As long as you have no complications, a half a glass of wine on a special occasion (your birthday or anniversary) should be fine. Alcohol enters the baby's blood stream at the same rate it enters yours, so your baby may be on the verge of passing out when you're just feeling a little tipsy. Check with your doc to be sure about any alcohol consuption.

No - I really wouldn't risk any alchohol. The fact is, a) there is a proven link between alcohol during pregnancy and birth defects, and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and b) there is NO known level of safe alcohol consumption. Scoentists don't know exactly how much alcohol consumption is safe if any is at all during pregnancy. So why take the chance?

Ask your doctor. They see you on a regular basis and would be able to tell you if you should drink or not. I've heard that it's ok, but it's always best to check with the doctor. They may have reasons behind not wanting you to drink. Good Luck!
