A premature infant is one born before 38 weeks. An infant who is smaller than an average-sized baby is called a low birthweight infant.

And, as others have said, the doctor who deals with infants in a Special Care Baby Unit is a neonatologist.

a preemie is a baby that is not born full term.....I dont think it is determined by weight even though the two go hand in hand.....My son was born at 29 weeks and weighed 2 pounds 13 ounces...he is now 4 years old and kicking....you cant tell from looking at him that he spent the first 2 months of his life in an incubator.....and a preemie doctor is called a neonatologist
