here's my setup: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b238/sr111/graphic.gif I want my machine to access the wireless router. the ip address of the router times out when I try to access it...am I doing something wrong here?

ignore that laptop. it has the same external ip as my machine. the ip of the router is 192.168.1.1 and when I try to access that ip from my machine i get a time-out msg...

from your drawing I see that the IP of your machine is the same as the address of the laptop.
This is never going to work that way! no 2 computers can have the same address (except in the case of NAT, but that does not apply in your case).
You need to find-out the address range of the ethernet router (your modem cable address, the wifi router.
You need to use an address in that range.

Then you need to know the IP address of the wifi router on its ethernet interface. It is not necessarilly the same as on its wifi interface.

only then you are going to know which URL to use to access your wifi router from its Ethernet port.

Once you have done that all you need to do is type in the account and password of the wifi router

Now for some possible problems:
maybe both your cable modem and wifi router are dhcp servers (big mess then!). workaround by using fixed ip address on your desktop.

It should work. I guess you are using windows, right? Just go to Control Panel, and check connection settings. You know, on your LAN device there might be some really necessary features to install, such as Service Advertising Protocol and so on. Try them out

the LAN port from the cable modem gets connected to the WAN port of the router. then the router gets connected to the switch...
